- Völuspa
- The title of the Völva’s prophecy in the Edda, in which is told the story of Ragnarok. The text seems to be a continuation of the interview of Odin with the sibyl described in the Vegtams-Kvida. The device of putting a relation of past facts in the mouth of a prophet as a forecasting of future events is very common in myth, and may generally be disregarded. Although the Völuspa is younger than the Lay of Vegtam, the text itself seems to have undergone less modification and it may be taken as the story of the end of the Aesir which was handed down by survivors to future generations. The shorter version of the Völuspa was found in the Flatey Book, while a copy of the main text was found in the Book of Hauk, another fourteenth-century manuscript, besides being repeated in the Prose Edda.
